Steps to chartering your own yacht
From complete novice to accomplished Yachtmaster, we can help and guide you at every step of the way. Rich can offer a bespoke, personalised learning programme for you, pointing you in the right direction to give you high quality, appropriate sailing for your experience and competence level.
As a beginner, you should seek to join either a basic sailing course, perhaps do some dinghy sailing at a local club, or if you want to go straight to cruising yachts, take a suitable, easier one, somewhere nice, warm, sunny & beautiful like the Greek Islands. Nothing will put you off more than a crowded area, cold & wet, with potentially fierce weather and a lot of shouting. “You only get one chance to be put off for life”.
As your crewing competence begins to develop and improve, you not only know what the Skipper is asking of you and can do it without hesitation, but you begin to spot things you think ‘might need adjusting’ and start to suggest them (which should be well received). I call this the ‘assertive competent crew’ phase.
Ready to be First Mate (‘Co Skipper’ in Greece)? Choose a Skipper, boat and area which isn’t too challenging at first, so you can focus on the role on the boat. As you build confidence, you can take on more challenging trips, including going to unknown ports, maybe even in the dark!
Finally, you feel ready to skipper a charter of your own - fantastic. Hopefully you have people you can bring, but remember that Skippering requires a degree of hierarchy and discipline to run the boat well, remember that family and friends might not always respond well suddenly to being told what to do all the time by you! So try to do it in ways that make them want to do it for you..
There are many steps to build from beginner to becoming a calm, smooth, refined skipper, talk to Rich about each and every stage of your development. Happy to help!
